What is Chiropractic?
The word Chiropractic means "done by hand". It is the world's largest drugless health profession.
Chiropractors specialize in treating people who suffer from dysfunction of the
nerves, joints, and muscles. Apart from neck, back, arm and leg pain, the list of ailments that respond
to Chiropractic include: headaches, migraines, numbness, tension, sprains/strains, etc.
Chiropractic care works through the wonders of the spine and nervous system. The degree of health
one can experience is based on the body being free from any interference to self-expression. The most
common physical interference is to the nervous system. If the vertebrae of the spine (which protect the
spinal cord and spinal nerves) are in any way disturbed, this causes interference with nerve impulses which
are essentially responsible for every function our bodies undertake. Chiropractors receive four years of
intense training so they may detect and correct these nerve impulse interferences.
This is my first visit to a Chiropractor - what will happen?
After you complete a health history form, your chiropractor will examine you and discuss your concerns in confidence. He/she will recommend a treatment based on the results of the examination. Any questions you have will be answered and treatments can usually begin on the same day.
What is an adjustment?
An adjustment is the careful and precise re-alignment of the bones in your body to acheive relief from pain or discomfort. Only licensed and certified doctors of chiropractic should be allowed to adjust your body in this manner.
Is it safe for my child?
Yes. Chiropractic is a safe and effective treatment for children of all ages. Your Chiropractor will examine your child and recommend appropriate treatment and/or consultation with other health care providers. Common childhood problems can include:
head, neck and back aches
arm, shoulder and hand problems
hip, knee, ankle or foot problems
gait problems
Bring your child to see your Chiropractor if they have any of the above problems.
How many treatments will I need?
Depending on the severity of your problem, you may be asked to make several appointments with your Chiropractor for treatment. If you have an injury which was left untreated for some time, you may require several treatments to restore proper function in the injured area. To maintain good health and prevent problems from occuring, regular visits to your chiropractor every few months are recommended.
How can I prevent injury?
Many common injuries are preventable. Correct posture at home and at work are vital. Any repetetive activity while standing or sitting can place strain on your muscles and skeletal system. Every 20 minutes, change position and/or stretch the parts of your body being used the most. Help for computer-related activity, sit up straight and provide support for your arms and wrists. Every 20 minutes, extend your arms in front of you and gently flex and rotate your hands to restore circulation. Stand up and walk around your desk whenever you feel tired. Help for standing-related activity, keep your back straight. Occasionally, walk on the spot to keep blood circulating in your feet and leg muscles. Proper fitting footware is important! Always turn your whole body to face your work, and do not just twist from the waist. In any situation, where lifting is required, bend at your knees and then lift with a straight back using your leg muscles to lift, not your back muscles! While driving, ensure that you head rests are in correct position and always wear your seatbelt. In winter, be extra careful getting into and out of your car - support yourself on the car door or frame and move slowly.
Can I just drop in?
Yes. Every effort will be made to help you see a Chiropractor as soon as possible after your arrival at our office. Appointments can be made in advance, but are not required if you are unable to phone ahead.
